Assam Public Health Bill

A quiet revolution to create a healthier India has kicked off in the east with Assam becoming the first state in the country to introduce a bill guaranteeing the right to health and well-being.
Responding to an appeal from the Centre for legislating on health rights, the state government tabled the landmark Assam Public Health Bill, 2010, in the assembly. The bill proposes path-breaking provisions for health equity and justice to achieve the goal of health for all.

Neighborhood Sanitation and Housing Habitability Ordinance

Introduced to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in January 2006, but currently pending committee vote, the measure strengthens the City's Health Code regulations and enforcement powers regarding environmental health conditions in rental housing. It includes a new provision prohibiting smoking in common areas of multiple unit buildings, measures to limit vermin, and classification of asbestos as a hazard, while new powers to the Department of Public Health.

Blackfeet Clean Air Resolution

In July 2005, the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council passed the Blackfeet Tobacco Free Act, which states that all public places will be smoke-free and spit-tobacco-free on the Blackfeet Reservation. The tribe passed the Blackfeet Tobacco Free Act to recognize the harmful effects of tobacco and to protect public health. The law still recognizes the traditional aspect of tobacco use. The passage of the Tobacco-Free Act is part of many tribal health initiatives to address commercial tobacco health related diseases and deaths on the reservation.
